PM Modi Launches Delhi Projects, Targets Arvind Kejriwal: ‘I Don’t Build Sheesh Mahal, I Build Houses’

On January 3, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated several development projects in Delhi, including 1,675 flats for residents of ‘Jhuggi-Jhopri’ (JJ) clusters at Ashok Vihar, as part of a slum rehabilitation initiative aimed at providing dignified living conditions for the underprivileged.

During the event, PM Modi criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and its leader, Arvind Kejriwal, accusing them of misgovernance and corruption over the past decade. He referred to the AAP government as an “aapda” (disaster) for Delhi, alleging involvement in various scams related to liquor policy, education, healthcare, pollution control, and recruitment.

In a veiled reference to Kejriwal, PM Modi stated, “I could have also built a ‘Sheesh Mahal’ (glass palace) for myself, but my dream was to give a pucca house to my countrymen.” This comment alluded to allegations that Kejriwal had spent lavishly on his official residence during his tenure as Chief Minister.

In response, Arvind Kejriwal held a press conference criticizing PM Modi’s remarks. He accused the Prime Minister of engaging in “abusive politics” and personal attacks, suggesting that if the BJP-led central government had performed effectively over the past decade, there would be no need to criticize the Delhi government. Kejriwal also referenced PM Modi’s past controversies, including the custom-made suit reportedly worth ₹10 lakh, implying hypocrisy in the Prime Minister’s statements.

This exchange highlights the escalating political tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as they prepare for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 2025. Both parties are intensifying their campaigns, focusing on issues of governance, development, and allegations of corruption to sway voters in the national capital.
