‘Roadmap Clear For Chandrayaan-4’: What Dr V Narayanan Said After Becoming New ISRO Chief
Dr. V. Narayanan has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), succeeding S. Somanath. He is scheduled to assume office on January 14, 2025, for a two-year term.
With nearly four decades of experience at ISRO, Dr. Narayanan is renowned for his expertise in rocket and spacecraft propulsion. He has significantly contributed to various missions, including the development of the C25 Cryogenic Stage for the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III).
Upon his appointment, Dr. Narayanan outlined ISRO’s forthcoming missions, notably Chandrayaan-4. Following the success of Chandrayaan-3, which achieved a historic landing on the Moon’s south pole, Chandrayaan-4 aims to further explore this region by collecting lunar samples and returning them to Earth. Dr. Narayanan confirmed that preparations for this mission are already underway.
In addition to Chandrayaan-4, Dr. Narayanan emphasized other ambitious projects, such as the Gaganyaan mission, which seeks to send Indian astronauts into space, and the development of an indigenous space station. The Prime Minister has approved the construction of a space station, with the first of five modules slated for launch in 2028.
Dr. Narayanan’s extensive background includes serving as the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), where he oversaw the development of propulsion systems for various launch vehicles and satellites. His academic credentials include an M.Tech in Cryogenic Engineering and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, where he was awarded a Silver Medal for achieving the first rank in his M.Tech program.
Under Dr. Narayanan’s leadership, ISRO is poised to advance India’s space exploration endeavors, building upon recent successes and aiming for new milestones in the global space arena.
